CalOptima Health, recognized as the single largest health insurer in Orange County, has approved $8 million in grants. These funds are designated to bolster housing and homelessness services across the county. This decision holds relevance for a wide array of Orange County residents, including those living in Irvine who are enrolled in CalOptima's health plans. The grants represent a direct effort to address the ongoing challenges of housing insecurity within the region.

These recently approved grants are integrated into CalOptima's broader five-year commitment, which specifically targets housing insecurity. The financial backing for this initiative stems from a combination of sources. A portion comes from California’s Housing and Homelessness Incentive Program, supplemented by funds drawn directly from CalOptima's financial reserves. This two-pronged funding strategy enables a substantial investment into critical services and infrastructure improvements across Orange County.

The largest individual allocation from this grant approval, amounting to $3 million, has been awarded to National CORE. This organization operates as a nonprofit housing developer. National CORE plans to deploy these funds for the construction of 50 new units of family housing. These specific housing units are slated for development within the city of Lake Forest. The project is intended to offer stable living environments for families, directly aligning with the overarching goal of enhancing regional housing availability.

Beyond National CORE, eight other organizations are recipients of grants, with individual awards ranging from $100,000 to $2.4 million. These organizations include Olive Crest, American Family Housing, and the City of Santa Ana. Additional recipients are Action Alliance Foundation, Hub for Integration, Reentry & Employment, Korean Community Services of Orange County, My Safe Harbor Inc., and The Cambodian Family. Each of these groups will apply their respective grant funds to various programs aimed at improving housing stability and providing support for individuals and families experiencing homelessness throughout Orange County.

The collective aim of these grants is to enhance access to stable housing and related support services across Orange County. By distributing these funds among the nine selected organizations, CalOptima Health intends to reinforce the support network available to vulnerable populations. This continued commitment, supported by significant financial resources, underscores a long-term strategy to alleviate housing insecurity and its associated difficulties for residents throughout the county. The funds are expected to contribute tangible improvements to service delivery and the availability of housing options for those in need of assistance.
