“Clear the Shelters” month and associated adoption promotions at OC Animal Care in Tustin are concluding as August ends. Irvine residents seeking to adopt a pet have a limited window to take advantage of reduced fees at the county-run shelter.
Throughout August, adoption fees for cats, kittens, and rabbits have been cut in half on weekdays. Additionally, adoption fees for dogs weighing 25 pounds and up are waived. While dogs in this weight category typically have reduced fees year-round, the August promotion waives them entirely. OC Animal Care, located in Tustin, serves as the primary animal shelter for residents across Orange County, including Irvine.
The shelter is open daily for adoption visits from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., allowing visitors to walk through the kennel areas to view available animals. To inquire about a specific pet or schedule a visit, residents can call the main line at (714) 935-6848 and provide the animal’s ID number.
Several animals are currently available for adoption, each with distinct needs and personalities as described by shelter staff.
Among the cats, Mr. Llama, a 3-month-old orange tabby domestic shorthair, arrived as a stray about a month ago. Staff recommend approaching him slowly as he can be nervous. He is currently sharing a kennel with Alpaca, another stray who arrived around the same time and also exhibits nervousness, suggesting a gentle introduction. Both are eligible for the half-price cat adoption fee on weekdays.
Elain, a kitten, has been at the shelter for approximately one week after being found as a stray. While staff have not provided details on her personality, she is also available for adoption with a half-price fee on weekdays. Kai, at the shelter for about two months, would do best in a home without children and with patient owners, according to staff descriptions. Her adoption fee is also reduced on weekdays this month.
For those interested in dogs, Francis, a Mexican hairless mix puppy, has been at the shelter for about three weeks. Described as a friendly puppy who “loves attention,” staff notes indicate he would thrive with a patient and loving family. He qualifies for the waived adoption fee for dogs 25 pounds and up.
Pilaf, a timid dog who opens up quickly with gentle praise and patience, has been at OC Animal Care for almost two weeks. Staff note he is friendly and could benefit from additional training. He is also available with the waived adoption fee for larger dogs.
As August draws to a close, residents are encouraged to visit the shelter soon to meet these animals and benefit from the current promotions before they conclude.
