Voice of OC reported Thursday evening that incumbent Melinda Liu holds a narrow lead in the Irvine District 1 City Council race, sitting just 43 votes ahead of challenger John Park, who serves as an OC Food Bank Board Member, marking one of the tightest electoral contests across Orange County as votes continue to be tabulated.

As tallies stood at 5 p.m. Thursday, exactly two days after polls officially closed for the municipal election, results showed Liu capturing 39.4 percent of the vote share among the 10,992 total ballots counted so far in the district. Park trailed closely behind with 39 percent of the vote, while former City Councilman and Mayor Sukhee Kang held 21.7 percent in third place in the ongoing count.

Across other municipal races in the city of Irvine, mayoral incumbent Larry Agran held a lead with 69.7 percent of the vote against software engineer and opponent Maksim Egorov, who stood at 30.3 percent. In District 5, incumbent Betty Martinez Franco led with 34.4 percent of the vote, while former Councilmember Anthony Kuo trailed at 25.9 percent, leaving the remaining five candidates in that race with a combined 39.6 percent of the votes. In District 6, incumbent Kathleen Treseder led with 57.5 percent of the vote over Irvine sustainability commissioner and opponent Scotty Hong, who registered 42.5 percent.

These election updates arrive as the city of Irvine grapples with a structural budget deficit. The municipal financial shortfall is currently on pace to reach an estimated $37 million in two years. Amidst this ongoing budget dilemma, some of the political candidates have called for the establishment of an independent city auditor to oversee the situation. Additionally, residents across Irvine continue to debate the future of the Oak Creek Golf Club, a local topic that drew mixed opinions from candidates during a candidates debate held on October 17. The development proposal under discussion could see the Oak Creek Golf Club transformed into a housing development containing over 3,100 homes, accompanied by a new school, parks, and other community spaces.
