Irvine’s comprehensive design has prioritized the well-being of its residents for over six decades. Urban designers planned the city around parks, recreation, and quality of life, alongside efforts to attract clean industries. This foresight continues to manifest in high national rankings, with Trust for Public Land ranking Irvine No. 2 earlier this year among 100 large U.S. cities for the quality of its parks. The American College of Sports Medicine Fitness Index also named Irvine America’s seventh-fittest city this year, citing factors such as the city's parks and recreation infrastructure.

This environment has been transformative for residents like Mitch Atkinson, who moved to Irvine nearly 20 years ago. Employed by Pepsi, Atkinson transferred to Southern California from Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2008. He describes a significant shift in his lifestyle upon arriving in Irvine. Atkinson stated, “I got into endurance sports, and my life changed.” He now trains daily, incorporating swimming, biking, and running into his weekly routine. His wife, Vivian Atkinson, also embraced the city’s active offerings, joining the SoCal Triathlon Team, where Mitch Atkinson serves as one of five directors. Both are currently training for the Boston Marathon and together operate a recruiting business. Vivian Atkinson initially chose Irvine for its high-performing schools.

The city’s infrastructure supports these active lifestyles. Irvine's 22 villages were designed around shared gathering places, including parks, pools, schools, and recreation or community centers. For example, Atkinson’s village of Woodbury features a 30-acre space equipped with seven pools, three tennis courts, and four pickleball courts. Beyond village amenities, the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center at Heritage Park is recognized as a premier municipal swimming venue in the region.

Irvine also provides extensive cycling opportunities with over 113 miles of off-street bike trails, including the Jeffrey Open Space Trail, Hicks Canyon Trail, and Quail Hill Trail. Mitch Atkinson noted the thoughtfulness in the city’s planning, observing that the bike lanes and trails are large and well-maintained compared to adjacent communities. He also perceives a greater acceptance of cyclists within the Irvine community, suggesting that the prevalence of cyclists on the road has made their presence an expected part of the environment.

A variety of fitness options are available to Irvine residents throughout the year. For October, several specific events highlight these opportunities. Meditation and yoga practices are offered at various locations, including a Halloween Fitness Hike with Yoga on October 30 at Bommer Canyon, and Fitness Hikes with Yoga on October 9 and 16 at Buck Gully Reserve. The Lakeview Community Center hosts Bollywood Yoga and Laughter Yoga on Monday afternoons and mornings, while Gentle Yoga is available at Cypress Community Center on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings. Residents can also Meditate with a monk at Portola Springs Community Center on October 10 and 24.

Cycling enthusiasts can find options ranging from sunset rides to mountain bike clinics. The Bicycle Club of Irvine organizes weekday and weekend rides, and the Orange County Wheelmen host organized rides every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, with varying meeting spots.

The sport of pickleball continues to grow in popularity within Irvine. Junior, adult, and private lessons are available at Mike Ward Community Park, Portola Springs Community Park, and Heritage Park. For competitive play, Irvine Team Pickleball is active at Portola Springs Community Park. Additionally, the Pickleball & Wellness Collective meets biweekly at parks across Irvine.

The Irvine Spectrum Center also offers community workouts. This month, various brands host sessions on weekends from 8 to 10 a.m. on the SunWheel Lawn. These include Yoga with Vuori on Saturday, October 10; Yoga with Lululemon on Sunday, October 11; and HIIT with Vuori on Saturday, October 17. These diverse opportunities underscore Irvine’s sustained commitment to fostering an active and healthy environment for its residents.
