U.S. News & World Report has released its 2027 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings, with 29 Orange County campuses securing 31 placements among California’s top 100. These latest rankings, published on October 20, reflect student achievement in mathematics and reading, alongside socioeconomic factors present within school communities.
The comprehensive evaluation assessed over 65,000 public schools across the nation, comprising approximately 46,700 elementary schools and 24,700 middle schools. Schools were ranked at the state and district levels, with no national rankings provided for these grade levels.
Among the Orange County campuses highlighted, Jack L. Weaver Elementary School, operating within the Los Alamitos Unified School District, earned the No. 10 spot among California elementary schools. In the middle school category, Oxford Academy, part of the Anaheim Union High School District, achieved the No. 3 position statewide. The U.S. News & World Report noted that schools serving both elementary and middle school grade levels were eligible to appear in both categories.
This year’s rankings utilized an updated methodology, incorporating more detailed state assessment data to evaluate student achievement in both mathematics and English language arts. The scoring system assigns half of each school's overall score to student proficiency. The other half considers academic performance in relation to the socioeconomic factors of the student population it serves.
According to U.S. News, this approach aims to recognize schools that demonstrate strong academic achievement while acknowledging and accounting for differences in the student populations they serve. This refined methodology represents an expansion of their analysis of student performance, now incorporating assessment results across all reported proficiency levels rather than relying solely on whether students met specific proficiency standards.
The data used for these rankings is publicly available and was collected from state education agencies and the U.S. Department of Education. Specifically, assessment results from the 2023-24 school year were incorporated into the evaluation. In instances where schools achieved identical scores, student-teacher ratios were utilized as a tie-breaking factor to determine their final placement within the rankings.
While these rankings offer a snapshot of academic performance, U.S. News advises that they represent just one method of evaluating a school’s success. Residents and families are encouraged to consider these findings alongside other factors important to their individual educational needs and preferences.
