The landscape of college basketball coaching, particularly within the Big West Conference, continues to evolve with a mix of veteran leaders and new appointments. For Irvine residents, this shifting dynamic directly impacts the UC Irvine Anteaters, a perennial contender under head coach Russell Turner.
Turner stands out as the conference's most established coach. Since taking the helm at UC Irvine in 2010, his tenure has included numerous conference titles and a significant first-round upset during the 2019 NCAA Tournament, reflecting a long period of consistent success for the program. His coaching background includes early years on the staffs of Wake Forest and Stanford, both prominent programs.
Several other coaches across the Big West bring significant experience, contributing to a competitive environment for the Anteaters. Paul Pasternack, at UC Santa Barbara since 2017, has amassed nearly 190 wins over nine seasons, securing two trips to the NCAA Tournament and establishing the Gauchos as regular competitors. Dedrique Taylor, leading Cal State Fullerton for 13 years, has guided his team to two NCAA tournament appearances in 2018 and 2022, following earlier assistant roles at UC Davis and Arizona State. After two challenging seasons, the Titans recently experienced a bounce-back year with an 18-16 record. At UC San Diego, Eric Allard, who spent 15 years on staff including a long stint as associate head coach, was promoted to the top job. He has maintained momentum for the Tritons, guiding them to a 3rd place finish in the Big West following their transition to Division I.
The conference also features a number of coaches who have taken on new roles or are relatively new to the Division I head coaching ranks, bringing diverse backgrounds to their programs. At Cal State Northridge, Trent Newman arrived in 2023 following successful stints at the Division II level, including taking UT Permian Basin to the Sweet Sixteen and Cal State San Bernardino to a Final Four. He is seeking his Division I breakthrough and is fresh off a second consecutive 20-win season and a 3rd place finish in the Big West. Mark Phillips, now with a Big West program, previously led Utah Valley to two 25-win seasons and WAC regular season crowns after succeeding Mark Madsen. John Lee is at his third head coaching stop at Cal State Bakersfield, aiming to bring stability after previous Division II success.
Long Beach State brought Chris Acker aboard in 2024. Acker is known for his Division I assistant work with Hawaii, Boise State, and San Diego State, including assisting the Aztecs' run to the national title game. His second year saw 10 wins, though the team finished 9th in conference play. Randy DeGeorge, with more than a quarter-century in collegiate head coaching, arrived at Cal Poly in 2024 after considerable success at the Division II level with Colorado Mesa. His first two seasons at Cal Poly have been described as mediocre, though the program is noted to be in better shape. At UC Riverside, Mike Argenal, a former UC Davis player with multiple stints at his alma mater and assistant roles with Eric Musselman, struggled in his first Division I head coaching season, finishing 10th in the Big West. Mark Bibby, a former NBA point guard and national champion player at Arizona, came to the Big West in 2025 after a start at Sacramento State, where an 8th-place finish in the Big Sky marked a decent start for his coaching career. Lastly, James Getter is taking his first head coaching chance at Cal Baptist, hoping to build on the Lancers' recent momentum. His extensive assistant experience includes being part of VCU's 2011 Final Four staff and a five-year run under Tony Bennett at Virginia.
These coaching appointments and the established tenures of others define the competitive landscape for UC Irvine in the Big West, influencing the dynamics of every conference match-up.
