The Canopy, a new 12-acre open-air retail and dining hub, is slated to begin opening later this year adjacent to the tennis courts at Great Park. Developer Dan Almquist, CEO of Almquist, stated that the project aims to serve Great Park visitors’ needs and enhance their everyday lifestyle as the park continues to evolve. The development anticipates bringing new restaurants, shops, and gathering places to the area.
The announced tenants for The Canopy include a range of dining and retail options. For food, residents can expect In-N-Out Burger, Philz Coffee, H&H Bagels, Osen Urban Table, and Shootz. Shopping opportunities will include trendy clothing, sneakers, and accessories at Free People Movement and Solestage. Additionally, T&T Supermarket, a large Canadian-based grocery chain, will open its first Orange County store at The Canopy, occupying approximately 34,000 square feet.
Among the upcoming eateries is Shootz, a Hawaiian-Asian-fusion comfort-food restaurant. Michael Dancel, one of four co-founders of Shootz, stated that the Great Park's layout makes it suitable for family gatherings, which aligns with their restaurant's focus. Shootz, which Dancel created in 2019 with three friends, has five Southern California locations. Its signature dish features kimchi butter served on chicken katsu and shrimp. Dancel noted the restaurant looks forward to catering to families attending soccer practice and hosting events like baby showers and birthday parties. Shootz is expected to open at The Canopy late this year or in early 2027. Dancel explained that the name "shootz" is Hawaiian slang for "let’s go!"
Another new dining option, Osen Urban Table, is a spinoff from Irvine’s existing Izakaya Osen. Chef-owner Damon Cho stated that Osen Urban Table will offer an approachable and modern environment with a menu highlighting Japanese flavors. Cho emphasized that the concept aims to create its own identity as a neighborhood restaurant that people can enjoy regularly. He stated that the team is putting significant thought into the food, design, and service to ensure it feels like a place the Irvine community can consider its own.
The Canopy project reflects a continued evolution of the Great Park area, providing a designated hub for community members and visitors. The array of businesses aims to cater to Irvine families, fitness enthusiasts, and foodies. Developer Dan Almquist expressed the belief that this location will become a distinct draw for the community as the Great Park expands.
