Charlie Zhang, an Irvine-based entrepreneur and philanthropist, has been added to the city’s Wall of Recognition at Col. Bill Barber Memorial Park. The Wall, established in 2006, acknowledges over 400 individuals and organizations who have significantly contributed to Irvine through living, working, or studying in the city. Zhang is noted for his business success and his founding of Orange County Music & Dance, an acclaimed nonprofit performing arts school located in Irvine.
Zhang arrived in the U.S. at age 24 with $20 and a clarinet, having secured a music scholarship to Pasadena City College. His aspiration to become a professional musician changed when he injured his hand while working at a Chinese restaurant during his first week. Reflecting on this turning point, he told an interviewer that he knew he "had to keep going." For the next four years, Zhang worked as a dishwasher, often for 12 to 14 hours a day, six days a week.
In 1984, Zhang leveraged his savings, investments from friends, and a bank loan to open Shanghai Charlie’s restaurant in Capistrano Beach. This venture marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial career. He subsequently opened additional small restaurants across Orange County. By 1989, Zhang launched Pick Up Stix, a fast-casual restaurant chain that eventually expanded to 100 locations. He sold Pick Up Stix in 2001 for $50 million.
Following the sale of Pick Up Stix, Zhang transitioned into real estate development, establishing Zion Enterprises. Another business, Aseptic Solutions USA, focused on manufacturing nutritional beverages and was sold to Glanbia for $60 million in 2012. More recently, in 2024, Zhang founded Gummy Maker, a contract manufacturer specializing in nutritional and functional gummies.
His business achievements have funded extensive philanthropic efforts. Alongside founding Orange County Music & Dance, Zhang and his wife, Ling, have supported local arts organizations including the Pacific Symphony and Pacific Chorale. They have also contributed to City of Hope Orange County, which recognized the couple in 2025 with the Ling and Charlie Zhang Art Gallery on its Irvine campus.
Zhang's contributions have earned him several accolades, including the Orange County Business Journal’s Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award in 2025, an honorary doctorate from Cal State Fullerton, and the Entrepreneur of the Year award from Ernst & Young. Julie Virjee, board chair of the Pacific Chorale, has described Charlie and Ling Zhang as "exceptional leaders who lead with passion and intention." Zhang has expressed a desire to inspire future generations, stating that "Everyone can give on some level." The continued recognition highlights Zhang's lasting impact on the Irvine community.
