UC Irvine faculty have significantly increased their national and international recognition, particularly through elections to prestigious academic societies. This rise is attributed to a coordinated campuswide initiative focused on elevating the university's research profile and celebrating faculty achievements.
The Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Planning (IRAP), led by Vice Provost Roxane Cohen Silver, spearheaded this effort. Silver, a Distinguished Professor of psychology, medicine, and public health, became vice provost of IRAP in 2021, focusing on strategic planning and promoting initiatives for faculty excellence. The IRAP team, including strategic program director Andrea Bell and Office of Research editorial director Elspeth Riley, supports these efforts.
The initiative focuses on increasing nominations for major national and international awards. It encourages university departments to establish honors and awards committees, fostering an environment where colleagues recognize each other's work and collaborate on nominations. Faculty receive guidance for complex application processes, and participation in programs like the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is promoted. Vice Provost Silver notes that significant awards often follow a series of smaller recognitions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a public profile and pursuing appropriate honors.
A key development is ScholarConnect, an AI-powered faculty profile platform created with the Office of Information Technology. ScholarConnect allows users to search faculty specializations by questions or topics, connecting collaborators, industry leaders, journalists, policymakers, philanthropists, students, and community organizations with relevant researchers. It highlights expertise, publications, honors, and research accomplishments, aiming to make UC Irvine’s scholarly community more accessible and foster interdisciplinary collaboration and external partnerships. ScholarConnect will expand campuswide this fall.
The impact is evident in the growing number of UC Irvine faculty elected to prestigious scholarly organizations. Between 2000 and 2002, five faculty were elected to these academies; between 2024 and 2026, 19 have been so far. In April, UC Irvine marked a milestone with six professors elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in a single year, the highest number ever for the institution.
Currently, UC Irvine's faculty includes 46 members of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, 24 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 23 fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, 16 members of the National Academy of Engineering, seven members of the National Academy of Medicine, and five members of the National Academy of Education. Silver states that these elections foster a cycle where distinguished faculty attract new talent, generate discoveries, and inspire future scholars.
