For Irvine residents, this means the opportunity to use Metrolink services without purchasing a ticket for travel throughout the agency’s 545-mile system. Orange County is one of the six counties covered by Metrolink's operations, making the service available to those living in the area. In addition to Metrolink, Orange County Bus, a local transit agency, also plans to waive its fares on October 7. Other transit agencies participating include Riverside Transit Agency, Los Angeles Metro, and North County Transit District in San Diego County, expanding the reach of free public transportation across Southern California for the day.
The decision to offer free transit comes at a time when families across Southern California are experiencing the impact of higher gasoline prices. The statewide average price for regular gasoline reached $6.39 earlier this week, marking an increase of more than $1.70 from the price recorded at the same time last year, according to data from AAA. Metrolink Board Chair Doug Chaffee commented that California Clean Air Day is "an especially timely opportunity to experience all that public transportation can offer." He noted that leaving a car at home for even a single trip could result in money saved at the pump, fewer vehicles on the roads, and cleaner air for local communities.
