Henry Miller, a music teacher at Sierra Vista Middle School, has been named a CMA Music Teacher of Excellence for the second time. The Country Music Association (CMA) Foundation grants this award annually to 30 teachers nationwide who utilize music to transform lives. Miller previously received the same recognition in 2019 and was a finalist for the Grammy Music Educator Award.
Miller chose Irvine 36 years ago when he began his career, specifically seeking a community that supported the arts, particularly music education. This emphasis on arts education in Irvine has consistently aligned with his dedication to students. The CMA Foundation’s mission, which focuses on equitable access to music for all students, directly reflects this long-standing ethos.
As part of the award, Miller will receive $5,000. He intends to use these funds to enhance music education at Sierra Vista Middle School, specifically for purchasing new musical scores for student use.
In his role as director of instrumental music, Miller oversees three orchestras, three concert bands, and a jazz band. Each ensemble stages three performances every year, typically featuring three to five songs. He prioritizes discovering new musical literature for his students rather than repeating pieces, ensuring they face continuous challenges. A key aspect of his dedication is ensuring all students have access to quality instruments. "I never turn down a student who wants to play," he states, underscoring his commitment to inclusivity.
This dedication is supported by institutional backing. The Irvine Company's Excellence in Education and Enrichment Fund has contributed nearly $50 million over the past two decades to support arts and music education. Miller also credits the Irvine Unified School District, his colleagues, and administrators, noting that supportive administrators are open to new ideas. Additionally, the Irvine Public Schools Foundation supports various projects, including students performing for special needs children and at senior centers.
Miller defines student success not by prestigious accolades or professional music careers, but by the perseverance of the average student. He believes music welcomes everyone and emphasizes that the only way to fail in music is to stop trying. In the past year, several other Irvine teachers have also received significant music and theater recognition. These include Erica Turrell from Plaza Vista, Katherine Findlay from Meadow Park, Woodbury, and Westpark elementary schools, Becca Voight from Northwood Elementary, and Amanda Mailman from Eastwood Elementary.
